• Revocation button mandatory from 19.06.2026

Everything store operators need to know

With the new legal obligation to integrate a withdrawal button, the German government is implementing an EU directive(EU Directive 2023/2763) and strengthening consumer protection in the digital space. From 16.06.2026, online stores that conclude contracts with consumers via a user interface must provide a clearly recognizable button that can be accessed at any time and that makes it just as easy to cancel the contract as the purchase itself.

The aim: transparency, simplicity and legal certainty – for consumers and companies alike. However, implementation is technically and legally challenging. Those who act now not only protect themselves from warnings and fines, but also position themselves as a customer-oriented provider with modern standards.

To whom does the obligation apply?

The obligation to integrate a revocation button applies to:

  • Distance contracts concluded via an online user interface
  • Contracts for goods, services and digital content
  • Consumers as contractual partners – B2B transactions are not affected

Contracts concluded by telephone or e-mail are not affected.

Technical requirements

Implementation is clearly regulated:

  • The button must be clearly visible, clearly labeled (e.g. “Revoke contract”) and permanently available – during the entire revocation period.
  • The function must be accessible without login, even for guest orders.
  • After clicking, a form will open:
    1. Enter your name, contract identifier (e.g. order number) and e-mail address. No further information may be requested.
    2. Confirmation via button (“Send revocation”)
  • The store must immediately send a confirmation of receipt on a durable medium (e.g. e-mail).

Legal consequences of violations

If you do not integrate the button in time or correctly, you run a risk:

  • Warnings from competitors
  • Fines amounting to several thousand euros
  • Loss of consumer confidence

The obligation is not optional – it applies to all online stores, regardless of sector or size.

What else is changing?

  • The model withdrawal policy must be adapted – including a link to the withdrawal function.
  • The button is to be provided in addition to existing revocation options (e-mail, post, telephone).
  • Mobile devices must also be able to display and process the function without any problems.

Why act now?

Implementation is technically and legally demanding. It is particularly complex in the case of:

  • Individual withdrawal periods (e.g. for partial deliveries)
  • Contracts with exceptions to the right of withdrawal
  • Linking with order and customer data

Those who prepare early on can integrate the function in a legally compliant, user-friendly and brand-compliant manner – and at the same time position themselves as a customer-oriented provider.
